We just moved from a condo to a house that has about 7000 sqm + garden in front and approximately 1500 sqm + garden in the back. Being new to this I have done a lot more research before buying a lawnmower. Our first dilemma was to decide between gas and electric. Few things, which was in comparison, overall gas and electric lawnmowers, were:
- Gas is more powerful than electric. Might be true, but this is never a problem, even if you mow once in 3-4 weeks. We are quite satisfied with the power.
- Management of the cable: You get used to it once you plan the layout and how you mow the lawn. It starts from near the outlet and go far from it. This cable so you always follow and do not run the risk of running over. Although, you should still be alert to it.
- Maintenance: worried much less with trimmers. no gas, no oil, no smell in the garage, no special treatment when storing it away for the season, no servicing before the season
- Operation: easy to use different management of the rope, pull the lever and boot, no need to pull the rope, etc. Some expensive gas mowers are no switches to stop the blades, but leave the engine running when you are emptying the bag of grass, but that does not need anything like that.
- Environment
- Less noisy than gas
- Area of smaller denomination. 18 or 19 inches instead of the standard 22-inch mower with gas.
- Guarantee: Many people mentioned that gas mowers have 4-5 years and an electric motor have 2 years, but most of the mowers now, even the gas, they only have two years of guarantee. Thus, there was a question for us.
- Cordless? first of all, these are slightly heavier because it is bringing the battery, but also appreciate the agreement was to replace the battery after 2 years.
Go with these comparisons, we chose the electric lawnmower and started looking at the different models. Black and Decker stood out with basically 3 models MM 575, 675 and 875. Most stores carry 575 and 875 and I found many reviews of these two models.
The main difference in 575 and 875 model is the coverage area. 575 is 18 "while 875 is 19" so we ended up buying 875. Both are same Amperage (12 AMPS) but the 875 comes with rear bag also. We like the mower and how it works.
- Very easy to get started. They are all together. The handle is turned toward the front, just pull back and tighten two levers and its ready to go.
- A hook near the power plug on the handle so as not to accidentally pull the plug on the extension cable away.
- It 'was very difficult to find the correct template for this extension since there are no guidelines, but after much research here is what I found. It's 12 AMPS and run on 120 volt so its 12x120 = 1440 watts max. So if you run the max at 50 meters distance from the outlet, its very safe to use 14 gauge extension cords (50 feet). If you're doing 100 meters distance from the wall, and then advised to use his 12 gauge (100feet) cable. Although I'm using a 14 gauge cable to 100 meters by 100 meters. I understand that it is not always running at full amperage so it's quite ok. And his good work.
- Mulching: If you plan to mulch, you need to cut at least once in 7-10 days otherwise the grass grows too large
- Getting used to a small area as opposed to 22 inch cut mower with gas. you'll probably do another couple of extra runs based on how big is your lawn.
- 8 points for the cutting. Not that you need fine control over the grass, but it feels good that you have options. Moves up and down all the wheels so its probably better than those that only move the rear wheels
- Lighter: I noticed more flexibility during the ignition and reversed.
- Rear grass bag: a lot of people complained that you need to empty the bag once its 1/3rd full otherwise escaping the grass. I think we can successfully use until 2/3RD and then starts to fall the grass on the sides and making a line. It does not bother me much.
